Where are you from?
There’s so much to do in Burgdorf Castle with its unique combination of museum, restaurant and youth hostel. The new museum has many exciting things to reveal about the region and the wider world, while you can dine in a stately setting in the castle restaurant and then spend the night in the castle’s youth hostel. Live like the knights and damsels of old...
The wedding room, featuring 16th century murals and views over Burgdorf, is available on selected dates for official marriage ceremonies. You and your guests can then toast this special moment with drinks in the castle courtyard or outer bailey. Rest assured that your guests won’t find themselves dancing at the wrong wedding, as your celebrations will not cross over with anyone else’s.
The castle is one of the oldest fortified complexes in Switzerland. The well-preserved main buildings were built by Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen around 1200 using red brick - an innovative material at the time. After his death, the Kyburg dynasty took over the castle as their residence, occupying it until 1383, when they lost it in war and were forced to sell up to the city republic of Bern. A mayor of Bern moved into the castle, which then became the cantonal administrative seat with court and prison until 2012. The castle is to reopen in 2020 with a new museum, a restaurant and youth hostel, as well as event facilities.
A museum that offers amazement, great food, a good night’s sleep and plenty to discover
The castle is a box of delights bursting with amazing objects from down the centuries and from every continent for you to discover. The varied exhibitions with stories from the castle, the town of Burgdorf and the Emmental region establish links with the world both past and present. Visitors of all ages are welcome to try out many of the exhibits, solving riddles or discovering highlights on special tours. Will you find the castle ghost?
Fine dining
The restaurant can accommodate 60 diners and is designed as a place where locals can rub shoulders with castle visitors. Guests can enjoy delicious regional cuisine from morning till evening. The Assisensaal function room is a charming option for fabulous parties, banquets or events for up to 80 people. A garden restaurant in the castle courtyard makes for a lively atmosphere, while the tower garden is available for private drinks receptions. On seven Fridays each year the historic ceremonial rooms of Burgdorf Castle are available for weddings.
