Heating Network Using Wood As a Renewable Energy Source
Overview
Intro
The commune of Menzingen has centralized the heating for 37 local properties. In one big facility the wood for energy production gets collected and burned, reducing the CO2 emissions around 1’900 tons per year.
Why is this system forward-looking? Wood is CO2 neutral. Whilst growing, the trees absorb CO2 and release it to the environment when they get burned or die. The heating network in Menzingen burns the waste wood from local industries and forestries, supporting them and reducing the CO2 emissions for the region. During the tour our visitors learn about the positive effects and the future of remote heating systems, which are becoming more and more common as communes seek for more affordable and efficient ways to supply heat to their inhabitants.
