Sustainable Congress Shape the global congress in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Intro
The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) have long held sustainability as a core belief. With the 2022 Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) in Lugano, Switzerland being ATTA’s first global in-person event since 2019, it was essential to embrace and promote sustainability in all its facets.

Lugano
Being a small city, Lugano accommodations were all within walking distance of the venues. Public transportation and bicycles were also available. The host destination was easily accessible. Transfer from the two nearest airports (Zurich and Milan) is possible in under two hours by train.
Event sustainability highlights
- # 2: all vegetarian food The amount of meat consumed during the convention was drastically reduced, led by the creation of nutritious all-vegetarian menus at the convention center.
- # 3: support the locals Event food, drinks, equipment, and supplies were sourced locally, which supports the local economy, key for the 8th SDG: Decent work and economic growth.
- # 5: high standards The high standards of Switzerland’s social security, fair wages, and equality were met or exceeded throughout the event, demonstrating efforts toward Gender Equality and Reduced Inequalities, SDGs 5 and 10, respectively, and again to the 8th SDG.
- # 6: fully carbon compensated Switzerland Tourism offset the carbon footprint of the event. They supported emissions measurement and nature-based carbon offsetting through MyClimate. Climate Action and Sustainable Cities and Communities are the 11th and 13th UN SDGs.
Program
Day 1
Day of Adventure, included in the summit experience, highlighted 43 ways visitors explore and enjoy a Swisstainable adventure and connection experience in the beautiful Ticino region. Itineraries were created by Ticino Tourism in cooperation with the four regional tourism boards: Ascona-Locarno Tourism, Bellinzona e Valli Tourism, Lugano Region and Mendrisiotto Tourism.
Day 2 – 4
Full day educational program with press conference. Insightful keynote speakers and engaging breakout sessions. Press conference on the first day of the congress with organizers and sponsors.
Venues
All venues needed for the ATWS and their sub-events already existed and no new infrastructure was built solely for the event.
