Intro
Loco, the center of straw braiding in Onsernone, was in the Middle Ages the main town of the Onsernone community, which was founded around the turn of the first millennium. Today the place is primarily known for the Onsernone Museum and the mill.
The museum was established in 1966 on the initiative of culturally interested and committed Onsernonesi citizens, who wanted to preserve the cultural and national heritage of the region and make it accessible to the public. Housed in an old Onsernonese building, the museum documents a large spectrum of themes - from everyday rural life and work, to the straw braiding industry, to emigration, to profane and sacred art, and to testimonies to the presence of eminent personalities of European cultural life.
The mill of Loca, one of the oldest food processing sources of the region, dates back to the 18th century. The mill has been meticulously restored and is again operational. Since 1991, corn has been ground into polenta flour on the old millstones.
The mill is an important witness to the Osnerne Valley’s past and its milling tradition: at the end of the 19th century at least 27 mills were operating, today most of them have disappeared, or are no longer operable. On the upper floor, visitors can gather information on the history and technique of the corn mills of Onsernone.
