Intro

Martinskirche (St. Martin's Church) is found in the little village of Zillis in Graubuenden. The church is famous for its painted ceiling dating to the 12th century. The ceiling painting, which consists of 153 panels, is the only one in the world that is nearly completely preserved.

Looking upwards is mandatory in St. Martin's Church in Zillis. For there are square picture panels on the ceiling, that are unique in the world. Painted around the year 1100, the original pictures are nearly completely preserved. The church itself is mentioned for the first time in the year 831. Coins prove, however, that it even existed in Roman times.

The subjects of the pictures reach far back into the history of humankind. The outer panels depict mythical creatures, the inner panels the life of Christ. The museum of St. Martin's Church exhibits, among other things, the painter's workshop of a medieval artist and shows how the picture panels were created.
