Laupen Castle
Overview
Intro
Laupen Castle towers high above the medieval town of the same name at the confluence of the rivers Sense and Sarine. The splendid fortress is the emblem of the region, and a protected monument of national importance.
Strategically positioned where the Sense joins the Saane River, this magnificent castle braved the attack of the Habsburgs in the 14th century, saving the city of Bern. Among the highlights are a cell constructed of oak wood in the prison tower, a giant stone catapult and a grand hall built onto the ring walls. This is one of the best-preserved knights’ halls in Switzerland, with a fine open chimney, mighty beamed roof and impressive exposed masonry walls.
Information
The castle premises are open to the public throughout the year.
